I’m Adam Garland,

an artist and photographer

based in North Carolina.

My work ebbs and flows between photography, painting, murals, and all the color in between.

I’m drawn to people, movement, and the character of a place—whether I’m photographing a crowded stage, the inner working of a restaurant kitchen, making a portrait, or standing in front of a wall with a paintbrush.

I’ve always moved pretty freely between ways of making things. Photography lets me respond to what’s already there; painting gives me room to invent, rearrange, and make a mess. I like that tension, and increasingly I’m interested in the places where those two ways of seeing overlap.

Mostly, I’m looking for the thing that gives something its character and energy: a gesture, a color, a strange bit of light, an imperfect edge, or something I couldn’t have planned.
